We work with music to solve big human problems

The problem we are currently focused on is that of Othering. You may not know the word but you certainly know what it feels like.

Using music to solve big human problems

Something has gone terribly wrong with how we see each other.

We’ve lost the ability to disagree without deciding the other side is evil, or stupid, or not really one of us.

It happens in politics, in families, online, and in the way we talk about people we’ve never met. Every one of us has decided, at some point, that someone on the other side of an argument, a border, or a belief wasn’t quite as human as we are.

How We Do This

Music is a thing that most people understand: while you might not enjoy another’s taste in music – you intuitively know how they can love it.

Our strategy plays to this shared experience.

We currently run three programs, with a fourth in development. Each program builds on the outcome created by the one before. You can read a summary of each program below.

How we do this
musicto.com Global Community

Program 1

musicto.com

The first thing we do is connect strangers. While musicto.com presents as a music discovery site with thousands of tracks across hundreds of playlists, it’s really the creative output of people from over 40 countries who’ve been collaborating online since 2016.

Program 2

Global Emotions Project

The next thing we do is gather data. The Global Emotions Project asks people across the world a single emotional question. When we asked what they were afraid of, over 3,500 people replied, from every continent and generation.

Program 3

Substack: Insights from Others

Now that we have something to say, the next thing we do is get it out into the world. Insights from Others is our Substack. It shares a single human story at a time, drawn from the Global Emotions data, and asks nothing of you but to read it.

Program 4

musicto IRL

Everything so far has happened across screens. The last thing we do is close the distance in person. musicto IRL brings people together in real life, where connection gets its best shot at becoming friendship, the truest antidote to othering.
